What Is the Singapore PSLE?
- The Primary School Leaving Examination, commonly known as the PSLE, is a national examination taken by students at the end of their final year of primary school in Singapore.
- It is administered jointly by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board and the Ministry of Education Singapore.
- The examination serves as a placement exercise to help determine students’ eligibility for secondary school courses. Students’ PSLE Scores are calculated from their subject Achievement Levels.
- The examination assesses students in subjects such as English Language, Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue Languages, depending on their registered subjects and applicable examination arrangements.
Understanding the PSLE Scoring System 2026
Singapore uses the Achievement Level (AL) scoring system for the PSLE.
Under this system, students receive an Achievement Level for each subject. The overall PSLE Score is calculated by adding the scores for the four subjects included in the student’s PSLE.
The total PSLE Score ranges from 4 to 32, with 4 being the best possible score.
| Achievement Level | Subject Score |
|---|---|
| AL 1 | 1 |
| AL 2 | 2 |
| AL 3 | 3 |
| AL 4 | 4 |
| AL 5 | 5 |
| AL 6 | 6 |
| AL 7 | 7 |
| AL 8 | 8 |
What Happens After the PSLE Results Are Released?
After receiving their PSLE results, students and parents can begin preparing for the transition to secondary school.
1. Review the Results
Check the Achievement Levels for all subjects and confirm the overall PSLE Score shown on the result slip.
If you have questions about the results or documents, contact your primary school for guidance.
2. Understand Secondary School Eligibility
Review the secondary school courses and posting groups for which the student is eligible under the current MOE framework.
Eligibility should be considered alongside the student’s interests, learning needs and educational goals.
3. Choose Secondary Schools Carefully
Parents and students should research schools before submitting their choices. Consider factors such as subject offerings, school programmes, location, co-curricular activities, learning environment and student support.
Previous years’ school cut-off points may provide context, but they do not guarantee admission in the current year.
4. Submit Secondary School Choices
Follow the official MOE instructions for the 2026 Secondary 1 Posting Exercise. The S1 Option Form, submission dates, eligibility rules and portal instructions should be checked against the announcements for the relevant year.
5. Check the Posting Results
The release date and access arrangements for the 2026 S1 Posting Results should be confirmed through MOE’s official announcements.
Do not confuse the PSLE results release with the later release of secondary school posting outcomes. They are separate stages of the admissions process.
