What is the Chevening Scholarship?
Chevening is the UK Government’s flagship international scholarship programme. It provides selected scholars with the opportunity to pursue a one year taught master’s degree in the UK.
The programme is aimed at individuals who demonstrate leadership potential, professional experience, networking ability and a clear vision for their future career.
For Indian applicants, the UK Government says applications for the 2027-2028 Chevening Scholarships are open from 4 August to 6 October 2026.
Chevening Scholarship 2026 Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the Chevening eligibility requirements before submitting their applications.
1. Citizenship of an eligible country.
- Citizens from over 160 countries and territories worldwide are eligible to apply for a Chevening Scholarship.
- You must be a citizen of a country or territory that is eligible for a Chevening Scholarship.
- Applicants should check the Chevening page for their country before applying.
2. Return to your home country
Successful scholars must agree to return to their country of award for at least two years after their scholarship ends. This is an important condition of the scholarship.
3. Work experience
Applicants must have at least two years of work experience, equivalent to 2,800 hours.
The experience must have been obtained after completing an undergraduate degree. Chevening considers different types of work experience, so applicants should carefully review the official requirements when completing the application.
4. Undergraduate degree
You must hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for admission to a UK master’s programme.
For the current application cycle, your undergraduate studies must have been completed at least two years before the application deadline. You will also need to provide the required education documentation at the appropriate stage of the selection process.
5. Apply to three UK master’s courses
- Applicants must choose three different eligible UK master’s courses.
- Your selected courses should support your professional background, career objectives and future plans. Applicants should research their choices carefully before submitting the application.
- You do not necessarily need to have already applied to your university courses before submitting your Chevening application. However, successful applicants must eventually obtain an unconditional offer from at least one eligible course by the specified deadline.

Step 1: Check your eligibility

Step 2: Register online
Go to the official Chevening application system through your country’s Chevening page and register using your email address and mobile phone number.
You will receive an email containing a link to continue your application.
Step 3: Complete the eligibility checker
The application system will ask eligibility questions. You must pass the eligibility checker before proceeding with the main application.
Step 4: Save your access code
After passing the eligibility checker, you will receive a unique access code. Keep this code safely because you will need it to access your application.
